This is a fabulous Carved and Painted Wood Panel or Relief from the Abelam Tribe of Papua New Guinea. In the men's dwellings these painted wood panels have painted faces of important ancestors. They are hung in the men' houses to decorate their interiors. The openwork can be also depicted with not only faces, but animals and birds, and always colorfully painted. This panel is carved from a single piece of wood. The ancestor figure is usually surround by birds and closed off at the exterior by a narrow border. A beautiful piece of artwork that would adorn your home or collection.
