This is a fabulous Vintage Fulani Trade Bead Necklace with White, Blue and Red old Trade beads and Brass bells on the bottom. These beads were originally made in Venice during the 1800's or early 1900's and traded to this region shortly thereafter. The favored bead colors used in Hausa-Fulani jewelry are characteristically unusual, muted but with a richness and depth that makes them uniquely beautiful. Approximate 28 strands of beads are gathered at the back of the neck and in the front, with large-hole beads and the bells are attached at the bottom and it has a cord that ties in the front. The Fulani, many of whom are nomadic, live in an area from Mali in the west to Cameroon in the east. Modesty aprons, cache-sex jewelry, denote age, status and social condition. They were worn to attract attention and protect against evil. This necklaces show an inventive combination of beads and bells made by the Fulani women. They are well known for their exquisite bead work using the small tiles beads in a variety of colors and patterns. This is collectors piece and will adorn any women, collection or home. The bells give this necklace a very melodious sound when moving.
