Papua New Guinea Shell Armband Lumi Tribe Fiber Currency Wealth Armband

Sorry, this item has sold.

This is a wonderful Large Old Woven Conus Shell Fiber Armband from the Lumi Tribe of the Torricelli Mountains, Angugunak area, West Sepik, Papua New Guinea. Conus shells are worn to display ones wealth, rank and power and were considered prized possessions. Shell money is a medium of exchange similar to money that was once commonly used in many parts of the world. Shell money usually consisted either of whole sea shells or pieces of them, which were often worked into beads shapes or attached to woven fiber armbands. The use of shells in trade began as direct commodity exchange, the shells having value as body ornamentation. The shells have a lovely worn patina from years and generations of use. This Conus Shell bracelet Tribe would be wonderful in addition to your collection.
