This beautiful Old African Fang Reliquary Fetish Basket with Assorted Broken Shells and Leather/Hides inside comes from Gabon. This reliquary guardian's face is is covered in etched brass and the neck has wound rattan around it. Fang figures often appear as though they are slightly crouched with legs slightly bent or shown in a seated position with a narrow stick-like extension often reaching downwards from the buttocks. Often, the byeri reliquary held the bones of ancestors and were venerated through annual ceremonies at which they were present in the form of the sculptures. Figures of the Fang would often be embellished with native copper bands around arms or wrists. This would be a wonderful reliquary basket to add to your collection or your home.
