This is a Vintage and very Unique Dogon Carved Wood Monkey Mask with White, Yellow and Green Speckled Paint and comes from Mali. According to Dogon beliefs, the monkey represents wild, uncivilized, dangerous, and antisocial behavior and the direct opposite of their beliefs about the way a proper, solid, upstanding Dogon person is expected to behave. Among the Dogon, similar masks are identified as monkeys, with triangular eyes and wide lips. During the Dama masquerade different types of monkeys are danced to perform. These monkeys include "Omono" which refers to the 'white' bellied monkey like this one, and it will dance as a symbol of improper behavior. The Dogon believe that the baboon mask reflects the 'wild' side of mankind, uncivilized, anti-social and dangerous. A wonderful mask to add to your collection or home.
