This is a beautiful 30 Year Old Painted Wood Dance Shield from the Tolani people of New Britain in Papua new Guinea. The peoples of the island of New Britain northeast of New Guinea are remarkable for the scale and variety of their ritual arts. Many of the island's largest and most spectacular art forms are made from ephemeral materials. The Tolai people produce a variety of mask and shields in wood with fiber as well as dance wands and other ritual items. Dancing Shields and Ceremonial boards are unique in design and color using clan images and bush spirits and decorative geometric designs painted in a variety of colors. This particular shield is used for dance for ceremonies. Each Shield is one of a kind and totally represents the craftsmanship and talent handed down through generations. This shield is old very unique in design and color. This would be a wonderful unique and decorative item for your home or your collection.
