This is an old beautiful Beaded Collar from Xhosa Tribal people of Eastern Cape Region of South Africa. This flat circular band collar with single mother of pearl button enclosure. Openwork bands in varying widths of color from outside inwards, starting with pink, and blue, and ending with a twisted edge of white and black beads. The Ithembu collar is the foundation of all adult Xhosa beaded costumes with one or more collars or necklaces worn over it.
This elegantly beaded collar in the more mature colors of dark pink and dark blue, would have been worn by an older man or woman. Xhosa people’s of South Africa each create jewelry using beads but each has its own distinctive cultural meanings and forms. Traditionally, in Xhosa culture a person’s social status and identity could be read through their bead work. Social meanings were created through the use of patterns and color to mark a person’s age, gender, marital status, social role and social rank. This necklace would be a wonderful addition to your home o collection.
