A Gau is a Tibetan Buddhist amulet container or prayer box and worn as jewelry. It is a small container used to hold and carry powerful amulets or sacred objects. Because they are worn as jewelry, Gaus are made of metal and are often ornamented with semi-precious stones. Almost every man, woman and child in Buddhist Tibet and the Himalayan area of India carries a variety of charms and reliquary amulets on the body, each one intended for a different purpose. This particular Gau Amulet is embellished with Turquoise and Coral stones, with old brushed silver beads, Afghanistan charms and Heishi, and red Africa White hearts beads. This container has a removable back to it.
