This is a beautiful Carved Wood Crocodile Handle with Inlaid Mother of Pearl that comes from the Southern Massim People of Woodlark Island, Papua New Guinea. Handles are unique and are valuable ceremonial objects, and even today is still a main theme in the arts and cultures in the Massim region. Shallow-relief wood carving is the most widespread medium for this style of handle, which combines human and animal forms with abstract motifs such as scrolls, chevrons V-shaped patterns, circles and has bands of zigzags and carved designs throughout. Some motifs are purely decorative; others represent everyday objects and natural phenomena. Some motifs represent matters important in Massim beliefs. The most commonly decorated objects are, clubs, dance paddles, ceremonial staffs and axe handles. Dance and Ceremonial handles were prized, because they were created and carved locally. This crocodile handle is graceful and delicately carved and is adorned with inlaid Mother of Pearl shell work. This is a wonderful Woodlark Island decorative handle and would be a lovely addition to your collection or home.
