This is a fabulous old Bailer Shell Necklace worn and used by the people of the Milne Bay, Western Highlands, Papua New Guinea. The large Bailer Shell (so called since it was literally used to bail water out of canoes) shows discoloration from sweat and oils from ceremonial use, as well as traces of red pigment showing it was worm during the Moka or Gift Giving ceremony. These shell necklaces were worn by the “Big Men”, the initiated men and the Shamans of Papua New Guinea, and only during special ceremonies and rites. These were worn by men and women and hung around the neck by a fiber rope. This large shell would be suspended around the neck as a pectoral or large pendant. As a form of currency, they were an important part of the bride price in marriages, as well as the shells had such value that they were used as payment money as well as the as payments after wars and feuds.
