This is a simple, but unique Clam Shell Adze from the Matty Islands, Wuvulu Province, Papua New Guinea. This Adze has a clam shell embedded in the wood hand handle, is called a Wuvulu Island breadfruit splitter adze. The Tridacna Shell has a blunt chisled edge, which is achieved shaping and by grinding the outer surface. This tool is known as "toki Fasua" (tridacnaAdze). Coconut fiber is often found in the form of cordage and used as a binding or a suspension cord. All weapons and tools were made from wood, shell and bone. This old adze blade, made from giant clam shell is a fine example of a wood cutting, carving tool from before western contact brought in metal tools. These adzes are are considered ceremonial objects and very valuable to their owner.
