African Door Nupe Tribe Wood House Door Geometric Relief Door

This is a very old beautiful Hand Carved Wood Abstract Nupe Door from the Nupe Tribal People that live along the banks of the Niger River in Nigeria. The Nupe live in large towns or cities called ezi as well as in smaller villages called tunga or kangi. They live in clusters of compounds forming a ward. A village chief assisted by the village elders are the main authority. They represent families, energy, and household belongings. Doors or panels for the native houses and some were used strictly as shamanistic tools. The shamans used them to evoke positive energy for wealth, prosperity, joy and happiness. The door is constructed of wood, covered with well-designed and beautifully executed images in low relief. The flat surface of this relief are shapes entirely covered with incised lines and patterns. The surface of the door is a rich brown, mellowed by age and use. The backs are usually plain and those views are not shown unless it is critical to the piece. A wonderful old Nupe door to add to your collection or your home.
