African Yoruba Crest Carved Painted Helmet Mask

Sorry, this item has sold.

This is a wonderful Male Hand Carved and Painted Head Crest Mask with Hair from the Yoruba Tribe of Nigeria. This head crest mask is used in dances in honor of Egungun, the god of ancestors. This old ‘Egungun dance crest’ with a painted black head and face, yellow colored eyes has tribal scarification marks, as well as hair attached to the head, which is nailed on. Helmet masks such as these are used in the grand mask dances in honor of the god of ancestors 'Egungun'. These dances are performed by men with the aforementioned head crests and in very colorful, large, floor-length costumes. This is a beautiful mask with a a nice patina and would be wonderful in your collection or home.

13.5 Inches Tall
7 Inches Wide
11 Inches Deep

This old mask shows age, some discoloration and is missing hair, but overall in wonderful condition.
