This is a wonderful Female Mendaska Mask from the Uramot People, Baining Area, New Britain, Papua new Guinea. The Mendaska mask was traditionally worn during the daytime performance ceremonies of the Uramot people and is associated with female reproduction, fertility and spirits of the bush. The mask is made from the bark of the breadfruit tree, soaked in water and then beaten and dried into a cloth, and painted with a facial expression design, using red paint made from sap and black paint from tree resin. Once a Mendaska mask has served its ritual purpose, it is destroyed or left to decay back into the bush it came from.
The mask showed great vitality, originality and diversity in form, shape and scale, with abstracted and stylized facial features. They have a great presence, power and dynamism. A wonderful one of a kind dance mask to add to your collection or home.
