This is a Beautiful Vintage Long Pink, Blue, Black and Green Brass Studs Multi Twisted Strand Beaded Necklace from the Zulu Tribal People of South Africa. For many Zulu and other relocated peoples of Southern Africa in the 19th and 20th centuries, beaded jewelry, garments, and other accessories became important markers of identity. Beadwork was a visual marker of social position, marital status, ethnic affiliation and location of the family’s homeland. Zulu beadwork has its traditional use is as a form of communication between men and women. Beading was done by women and usually taught to them as girls by their mother or an older sister. The colors and designs of a woman’s beaded jewelry communicates her home, family, marriage status, and dozens of other messages. This would be a lovely addition to your collection.
