This is a fabulous Dance mask from the Elema/Eharo Tribal People of the Papuan Gulf in Southeast New Guinea. The Elema formerly practiced an elaborate cycle of masked rituals. While some mask types were sacred, others, such as this Eharo mask, were created primarily for amusement. To the Elema Ehar, masks were things of gladness, and danced as a prelude to more sacred rituals. Eharo represent supernatural beings as well as humorous figures. They were made and worn by young men from neighboring villages at the request of the village hosting the ceremony. This Mask is made of barkcloth, pigment, wicker, cane, and vegetable fiber. The barkcloth mask is stretched over a split-cane frame, sewn together with vegetable fiber and colored with white, red and black natural pigments. Across the Pacific, barkcloth is a symbolic and often high status non-woven textile made from the pounded inner bark of either the dye fig or paper mulberry tree. The mask showed great vitality, originality and diversity in form, shape and scale, with abstracted and stylized facial features. They have a great presence, power and dynamism. A wonderful dance mask to add to your collection or home.
