This is a beautiful Kula Mwali Ornate Beaded Mother of Pearl Shell and Large Cowrie Shell from the Massim People, Gawa Island, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. This kula shell currency has red, blue, white and yellow beads woven around the shell with dangling shells. Kula is a ritualized trading culture existing in eastern Papua New Guinea. It is essentially a network of villages joined by a common trade route, known as the Kula Circle. By analogy, Kula allows you to experience the magic and legends of Papua New Guinea. Kula was and still is a life sustaining cultural exchange. The Kula experience created long ago by few men has grown and become the spirit of many of the people in Papua New Guinea. It is an tradition that has been repeated over many generations and adapted to meet the needs of this unique community. The complete experience of Kula stretches out beyond the few men that make the journey to their families and villages. Kula gives the people strength, health and happiness in harmony with each other. Kula creates a two-way return of favors. The saying around Papua is once in Kula, always in Kula. This is an extraordinary ornate kula shell and would be a wonderful addition to your collection, a real collectors piece!
