This is a wonderful Hand Carved and Painted Wood Banda Mask from the Coastal Region of Guine-auBissau. This mask combines human features and those of a antelope, crocodile, shark with teeth bared. This mask was worn horizontally on top of the head, the mask is attached to a skirt of vegetable fibers that covers the body of the wearer. Banda masks were the property of the Simo men’s society, which historically oversaw and regulated fertility and initiation ceremonies. Today it is danced primarily for entertainment. This mask would be a wonderful addition to your collection or home.
