This is a great Senufo Face Mask or Kpelie that represents the ancestors from the people of the Ivory Coast. The Senufo are a traditional agricultural people of the northern savanna, renowned around the world for their woodcarving. Senufo masks are used in ritual forms of ancestor worship and are particularly prized by collectors. This mask has a variety of functions. It takes part in the rites of the Lo society at initiation ceremonies, at funerals and second burial rites for Lo members. It also is employed at Harvest festivals when thanks are given to ancestors who have helped to ensure good crops. The masks are supposed to depict fertility and typically represent the union between a man and woman.
