This is a wonderful Old Yoruba Gelede Crest Painted Wood Mask from the Yoruba Tribal People of Nigeria. The Gelede cult honors women, mothers and fertility in general. In this cult, male dancers dance in pairs in colorful costumes, in annual large-scale processions. They wear these head crest masks, not on the face, but above on the head. The typical Gelede mask is carved and painted wood. The mask is colorfully painted and the face is red, the with tribal scarification marks. Gelede masks will also reflect local traditions of facial marking and symbolic headdress. This helmet mask would be a wonderful addition to your collection or home.
