This is a very unique and old Nigerian Coin and Leather Basket Lid from Nigeria. This lid would cover a leather covered basket with silver coins woven onto it. The Hausa people of Northern Nigeria used baskets such as this for storing items. In Western Africa, coin money was usual legal tender up until the mid 19th century and has been added to the basket to enhance its prestige. This lid is known to cover a money basket. Silver coins or cowries, are mostly used today as decoration or in jewelry. A unique old Yoruba basket lid covered with silver coins would be a wonderful to add to your home or collection.
