This is a beautiful African Old Rendille Woman's Necklace called (Mpooro Engorio) from Kenya. This particular necklace is given to a woman upon her marriage. This necklace is composed of several bundles of hair or fiber, adorned with trade beads and bound over the neck & shoulders with animal hide. Red ochre was applied heavily to help keep the piece from chafing the skin. The same red ochre was applied to the hair to make the crescent shaped style known as the doko. This necklace has been oiled over its lifetime in order to maintain its beautiful condition. A truly lovely piece to add to your home or collection.
