This is a wonderful Hand Carved and Hand Painted Yena Figure from the Nukuma people of the Amaki Village, Washuk Mountains of Papua new Guinea. This ritual wood carved figure bears witness to the ceremony and culture of these people dedicated to the cultivation of the yams. The yam is the center of Kwoma culture. The agricultural activity and an object of prestige is the yam and with its ceremony comes the elements of myths, which becomes a spirit of nature and magic. Each village has its own codes, trademarks and group of sculptures, who alone produces these works of art for ritual purposes. The figure of worship called Yena, is a carved figure that relates to the worship of the yam and its ceremony. This worship and ceremony is during the planting period of yams for fertility. This unique carving is done with natural pigment with all the clan markings and is created for one of the yam harvest ceremonies. This Yena would be a wonderful addition to your collection or home.
