Mask African Old Museun Quality Toma Initiation Mask

$2,000.00

This is a Museum Quality Hand Carved Wood Toma Ceremonial Mask from the Tribal People of Liberia. Among the Loma people of Liberia who are identified as the Toma in Guinea, the male secret society known as Poro is the primary association for the initiation of all males and the means whereby social control is exercised. They were worn with a large raffia costume. Most have a flat face, the traditional beaked nose, protruding brow and horns. Powerful leaders of this secret society have badges of office and certain symbols reserved to them to influence initiates. They appeared during initiations of youths into manhood. Sometimes, they were held in the male secret Poro Society precinct in the ‘bush’ where they were kept hidden from the uninitiated. A truly fabulous mask for you home or collection.
