This is an Old Songye Male Female Fetish Figure, which is made up of two figures back to back where one is unusually female and the other male and is called a Janus statue. This wooden statue features two heads, two arms and four hands, two abdomens. Each head displays features that of sculptures from the Songye People. The Songye people live on the left bank of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Songye style is seen identified by the strong body , the jutting square chin and geometric nose with the eyes and brows which are prominent. Statues like this are known as Nkishi and often served to divine the future, control one's destiny, and forestall evil-doers or to work magic and most importantly to gain the attention of the spirit world. Among the Songye, such figures generally served a common purpose as objects of power . When represented by two bodies or heads, these carvings are supposed to embody more power than single ones.
