This is a very unique and old Cowrie Shell and Leather Basket Lid from Nigeria. This lid would cover a leather covered basket with cowrie shell woven onto it. The Hausa people of Northern Nigeria used baskets such as this for storing items. In Western Africa, shell money was usual legal tender up until the mid 19th century and has been added to the basket to enhance its prestige. This lid is known to cover a money basket. Cowrie shells, or cowries, are mostly used today as decoration or in jewelry.
