This is a fabulous 1970's Old and Rare and probably never seen before Child's One of a Kind Used Kavat Bush Spirit Night Fire Dancing Mask from Baining People of New Britain. This dramatic bark cloth Kavat mask is created by Central Baining peoples of New Britain, part of the New Guinea Islands and are used in the night dances, a nocturnal performance lit by firelight. The Central Baining practice both day and night dance rites. The night dance, by contrast, is accompanied by a male orchestra and dedicated to spirits, animals, and commodities associated with the surrounding forest. The masks of the night dance often represent the spirit of animals of the bush' particularly animals associated with the hunt. This mask is made with Bush materials. The Mask itself is Bark cloth with Bamboo and Reeds for the framework and tree Sap and Berries for the dyes. This Banning Fire Dance Mask is Museum quality and a real collectors item. This mask has personality and style and would wonderful addition to your home.
This mask shows age, stain mark on right side and singed marks from running through fire and some discoloration, but over all in good condition. One of a Kind and Rare Museum Quality
