This is a wonderful old Taro Root Pounder from the Coastal Sepik Area of Papua New Guinea. This superb old food pounder was used for smashing taro root into a pudding. The top of the pounder is a carved face which is in the form of a male ancestor. Carved from a single piece hardwood and it has a deep dark patina from years of use and being stored in a smokey house. Old pounders like this one were family heirlooms passed down through generations. A great item to display in your home or to add to your collection.
