This is a vintage Painted Wood Yam Stake from the Iatmul Tribal people of Middle Sepik Region, Papua New Guinea. This is a unique painted in Iatmul style Wood Yam Stake. The Iatmul create some of the most important array of carvings and all believed to be inhabited by very powerful spirits. Yam is a very import food essential in the the diet of all Papua New Guineans. All kinds of elaborate yam masks, statues and ceremonies are created to protect and watch over the fields to ensure a productive harvest. This is a wonderful and unique carved stake with a painted wood face and shell eyes to adorn and protect the yam crops. A nice old piece of Iatmul Art to adorn your home or add to your collection.
