This is a wonderful vintage and very unusual Ceremonial Carved Wood Female Pigment Dish from the Middle Sepik River Region of Papua New Guinea. What makes this pigment dish so unusual is the figure is carrying it on her head. Carved bowls were used for mixing ochre colors to paint important ceremonial objects. It could be an offering bowl as well. Ochre was mixed with a bit coconut oil to act as a binder to get it to stick well to the painted surfaces of ceremonial artworks. Sometimes shapes represent animals. Pigment bowls are owned and kept their whole life, and considered heirlooms over several generations. This would be a lovely addition to your home or collection.
