This is a Vintage Hand Carved and Painted Wood Sago Washing Peg from the Abelam People from the East Sepik Province in the Prince Alexander Mountain in Papua New Guinea. Sago Pegs or clamp " Tapak"are used like clothes pins to hold palm spathe in place on a framework so the shredded sago can be soaked in water and worked to remove the edible flour. These wooden peg sculptures were decorated to resemble an ancestor or spirit. This sago peg would a really fabulous item to add to your collection.
Shows some age, a nice patina and in good condition.
