This is a 30 Year Old Hand Carved Wood Biwat Village Shield from the Yuat River Region of Papua New Guinea. Biwat village shields are one of the most distinctive and best known Sepik shields. The almost always have three large well carved faces on the front.
These shields are unusually sculptural, with the nose areas of the three faces in this example projecting outward for several inches and all the relief carving being crisply defined. The faces on the shield represent a powerful spirit. These are highly carved carved wooden polychrome, Yuat river shields from the village of Biwat. This shield is old very unique in design and color. This would be a wonderful unique and decorative item for your home or your collection.
