Fiji Wood Kava Drink Bowl Ceremonial Kava Bowl

Sorry, this item has sold.

This is a Fabulous Large Round Hand Carved Wood Kava Bowl Supported with four Short Legs from the Tribal People of Lau Islands, Fiji. Large bowls of this kind are cut from a single block of wood, and were for the mixing of kava a drink made from the roots and stems of the pepper bush mixed with water. Kava is primarily consumed to relax without disrupting mental clarity, and is very much a drink of social function and of ceremony. It is said that the small lug beneath the rim was felt for by the girl preparing kava to orient the bowl.

I am a little disappointed with the size of the kava bowl, considering the description of the article was as a “drinking bowl”. But it is very nice as an ornamental piece.
