Papua New Guinea Mask Biwat Yuat River Lower Sepik

Sorry, this item has sold.

This is a Fabulous Wood Carved Ornate Mask with Cowrie and Nassa Shells and Cassowary Bird Feathers all from the Biwat People of the Yuat River Lower Sepik Region, Papua New Guinea. This mask by the Biwat is known by collectors for their powerful sacred flute stopper figures and masks. Sepik Masks from Papua New Guinea come in various styles, which vary mainly depending on the specific region they come from. Not all Sepik River Masks were made to be worn by people. Some masks were made to “decorate” sacred flutes, the front of canoes, as lucky amulets and even yams. This extraordinary mask would be a wonderful addition to your collection.
