This is a fabulous and Rare Baining Boys Mask from the Baining People of the Norther Portion of East New Britain. These people are best known for their spectacular masks and dance mask ceremonies. The name Baining means inland people. The whole artistic energy of these people is exerted in their songs and their dances, and especially in the design and decoration of masks. The creation of other stylized masks can pertain to special function, activities and purposes, and they are not an appeals to gods or ancestors, fertility, harvest, but a means to ritual power, vision or leadership. Specific masks can also be created for certain people who have shown and performed leadership and function which serves the Baining culture. This female tapa cloth mask with the natural dyes for facial expression has moss used as hair on top of its head. The community festivals can have music and dance, and different masks are created. This mask has a plastic tongue and teeth and one of a kind. A wonderful addition to your home or collection collection.
