Papua New Guinea Coconut Healing Marupai Papuan Gulf

Sorry, this item has sold.

This wonderful healing Marupai comes from the Papuan Gulf region of Papua New Guinea. Each Marupai is uniquely carved out of a single coconut. They each have distinct carvings and facial features defined by soda and ash designs. Some have human hair while others have raffia trim and others are just painted. The Marupai healers hang the Marupai in a circle around the patient. The story goes that the Marupai "eat" the sickness spirits and guard against new invasions. It is a wonderful piece of folk art from the Papuan Gulf, and would be a wonderful addition to your home or collection.
