African Kuba Tribe Ceremonial Knife Congo

$440.00

This is a wonderful old Kuba Knife from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Knives, currency blades and spears, all made of forged iron, attest to the skills in metal of the Kuba and related peoples of central Africa. Most exhibit an inventive variety of form and workmanship far beyond what was functionally necessary. Specialists in the field will identify these pieces much more specifically. The ceremonial knife was introduced by an early Kuba king as a peaceful replacement knife. The hilt is exquisitely decorated by inlaying thousands of wire bits into the wood. Also knives, daggers and swords from the Kuba people are used as prestige items. Historical documents indicate that quantities of them were brought to the Congo by Portuguese and Dutch traders beginning around the 16th century. They were then forged by Congolese blacksmiths to emulate foreign examples. They were reserved for nobles and used for important ceremonial occasions. This old Kuba knife would be a wonderful addition to your home or collection.
