Papua New Guinea Ceramic Clay Candlestick Sepik River

Sorry, this item has sold.

This is a fabulous old Handmade Clay Relief Designed Candlestick from the Sepik River of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea has the most the most unusual and distinctive ceramic traditions found anywhere in the world. New Guinea ceramists gather clay in the hills or swamps surrounding their villages and form it into wares that range from superbly functional cooking and storage pots to highly esoteric sacred figures and other items. In Papua New Guinea both men and women make ceramics, depending on the region, cultural group, and techniques involved. No potter’s wheels or glazes are used. Quick low-temperature firing under piles of burning brush transforms the clay into porous earthenware. This would be a wonderful item to add to your home or collection.
