This is a beautifully carved wood Luba Statue depicting Motherhood and Womanhood from the tribal peoples of Zaire. This superb Luba female statue is so distinct stylistically that the hand can be clearly identified, the extraordinary domed forehead, the open almond shaped eyes, the protruding breasts, raised scarification and the treatment of the elaborate coiffure of multiple braided rows. The gesture of the arms is highly inventive. The cupping of the breast probably relates to the meaning of other Luba objects in which a female figure gestures to her breasts, which is a reference to the role women play as keepers of the secrets of Luba royalty. The traditional carvings are for ancestor and spirit cults, for initiation, medical and divination purposes. The favorite theme in sculpture was woman since, according to a Luba myth, Vilie was the first woman spirit, founder of the clan and guarantor of fertility and the lineage. Women were cult guardians, and the royal wives played an important role. They were sent as emissaries to the chiefs of neighboring ethnic tribes, and they would contract profitable political alliances based on marriage. This was collect in the field and shows some age and a crack on left side of ear. It would be an amazing addition to your collection and home.
