This is a beautiful and sleek black Yaure Mask from the people of the Ivory Coast. The Yaure is a small tribe in the interior of Ivory Coast, but nevertheless they have succeeded in making a dramatic impact on West African mask culture. Traditional Yaure mask-making is some of the finest in Africa. Many of their designs and artistic ideas have been assimilated into Guro carving. In many ways, the Yaure masks are similar to those of the Baule and the Guro. There is the same tendency to mix human and animal features, the same penchant for superstructures and the same elaborate coiffure and patterned collar for their masks. However, there are differentiating markers. This would be a wonderful addition to your home.
