This old lime container from Burma was used for keeping lime paste to eaten with Betel Nuts. Traditionally, this antique brass container was used for keeping lime paste which was added to betel nut and spices, then chewed, providing a mild intoxication. This was a popular habit throughout much of Southeast Asia and remains so today in many places. The box is a simple designs and fit neatly together, which is unusual for older pots such as this. There is still residue left from the lime paste and the container has a nice patina from use.
