This is a really unique Old Binji Helmet Mask from the people who are part of the Kuba Kingdom of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are known for their stylistic masks, though they are rare. They practiced the same rituals as the Kuba, meaning their masks were used in a variety of ceremonies, such as initiations, funerals, or celebrations. Masks such as this one were often used in ceremonies for the king. Binji artists carved rougher-looking helmet masks. This mask has raffia around the bottom and around the top the use red Arbus seeds which are inlaid in beeswax. The back part of the helmet as incised designs. A rich layered patina and wear, demonstrates the use this mask received. This is a very unique and old mask and probably one of a kind. It would be a wonderful addition to your home decor.
