This is a fabulous large circular Cape Buffalo Hide War Shield from the Oromo People of Ethiopia. This Cape Buffalo Hide Shield has concentric rings around the protruding cone with embellished designs in evenly spaced rings, presumably in representation of the four cardinal directions. A thickly padded leather grip was firmly anchored with heavy leather laces. Each shield is hand crafted and most Ethiopian shields are made from a very thick, tough leather. The hides are stretched and hammered over (often elaborate) wood forms, dried and removed. Ethiopian warriors are renowned for their bravery, ferocity and hunting skills. These were the Native Hunting Weapons in Colonial Africa. This particular shield is magnificent and shows age and wear. It would truly be a wonderful piece of Ethiopian Art to grace your home.
