This is an Old One of a Kind Leather and Cowrie Shell decorated Baby Carrier from the Kamba Tribe from Kenya. Cowrie Shells have been considered a status of wealth or a sign of fertility in the African culture. In Africa, women carry their children on the back so they feel loved. The babies move to the sway of their mothers hips, synchronized throughout the day, by bending with them as they collect water or sweep the floor and rising again when the women stop to rest. They hang on as their mothers sell food in the market or pray at a church or mosque. African women also consider the traditional method of toting their children the only true version of day care. When it's time for feeding, the food is right there as a mother shifts her child to the front of her body, nestling the infant to her breast. Each baby carrier is made with the tribal women's individual style and design and would represent the materials available to them. This was collected in the field about 20 years ago and these baby carriers are hard to find. This leather is very hard and shows age and use. This Baby Carrier would be a wonderful addition to your collection or adornment to your home.
