This is a old woven sisal Penis Gourd with a Two Faces top and middle with Cowrie Shells worn by the men of Papua New Guinea. Penis gourds (Phallocrypts) were once the main clothing of many New Guinea men. Now they are worn only ceremonially although in some areas it is still the preferred mode of dress. This one with the hand twisted bilum cord net on it was probably only worn ceremonially and not daily. The gourd, which is often decorated with tassels and shells and woven designs and colors is fastened around the waist with bilum string and worn over the penis at a jaunty angle. This Penis shield is part of a long standing tradition with men in New Guinea and would be great used as decoration in your home and sure to be great conversation pieces!
