African Tent Post Tuareg Tribe Carved Engraved Wood Tent Post

$97.75 $115.00

This is a beautiful Ornate Carved Wood Tent Pole from the Nomadic people of the Southern Sahara called the Tuareg. The Tuareg are a fiercely independent, nomadic people, and on the move with their herds and camels over vast areas of the southern Sahara, they produce no masks or figures. Instead, they create an impressive world of traditional, abstract, beautiful, functional objects of leather, wood and metal. This tent post is called Igem and are erected outside each Tuareg family's tent to mark or locate the entrance flap and enhance the doorway. After leather, wood is perhaps the most important material in Saharan daily life, and is used for the poles and beams of the Nomads' tents. They are used to hang bags, saddles as well as bed frames, dishes, cups, milking bowls, mortars and pestles. Each pole is sharpened to a point for standing upright in a nomadic encampment, and the upper half is elaborately carved and pierced with semicircles and triangular shapes. This was collected in the field and shows age and has a nice patina. A wonderful item to have in your home or collection.
