This is a wonderful Woven Painted Coconut Shell Mask from Papua New Guinea. Coconut masks were made by women and and often hung in their cooking areas. Masks in Papua New Guinea were carved out of all various materials. Each mask made and carved were understood to be the face of ancestral spirit. This particular coconut mask with its clan colors and designs has a woven rattan frame around it. It is a lovely mask and whimiscal in nature and it is amazing how the coconut shell can be transformed into a work of art. They have woven fiber noses that are in an open loop form so that septum jewelry can be inserted. This would wonderful home decor. Field collected and shows some age.
