This is fabulous Men' Head Mask made from Tree Fern and Clay is from the Malakula Island of Vanuata. This ancestoral spirit mask is made from Tree Fern, Vegetable Paste, Cane, Cobwebs and Pigment, and worn for traditional ceremonial occasions and ritual events. This mask is called "Magje ni Hivwir", which means from tree fern. The masks main structure is made of tree fern and root pigment with molded clay covering a wicker framework. The clay is then painted with natural pigments. The majority are decorated with traditional patterns, a stylized face or a representation of an ancestral spirit. These masks represent the faces of both male and female ancestral spirits. These elaborate masks, sometimes decorated with paint and fern, are still worn in traditional ceremonies on the islands of Ambrym Ambae, Maewo and Malakula. This is a rare find!
