This is a fabulous Vintage Brass Pendant, which is worn as a Waist Ornament or (benyop) worn by the woman of the Adi-Minyong Tribe of Arunachal Pradesh in Northeast India, and is complimented with Dark Red Twisted Ropes of Glass Beads and other Assorted Beads with a wrapped fabric and a Bell Clasp. This pendant is composed of boldly patterned copper and brass alloy discs and usually strung on cord, and it is an example of the rich jewellery traditions of some of India's and Nagaland's tribal communities, who inhabit some of her more remote regions. It also exemplifies the way in which traditional jewellery in much of South Asia was closely tied to life-cycle rites, for a simple waistband worn by young girls of this community was replaced with a more elaborate one after a puberty ritual, to be removed on the birth of her first child. These are traditions that have been passed down through generations. There are many other examples of jewellery being used to mark age, status or prowess, especially among the tribal communities.The tribes of Nagaland and all of Northern India show a very strong sense of designing as well as adorning themselves with jewelries. Brass, bones, beads, colorful stones and conch shells all go into the crafting of Naga jewelries.
