This is a wonderful Vintage Red and Blue Bush Twine Nassa and Cowrie Shell Belt from the Abelam People, Sepik River, Papua New Guinea. This belt is worn only by men of status in a village. The belt consists of woven twine with small Nassa Shells and Cowries Shells sewn on the fiber belt, and the red and blue colors comes from using natural plant dyes. Shells were currency in Papua New Guinea. This belt was significant and important to the man who created it and wore it. This belt would be a fabulous addition to your collection.
